It builds great finger independence and is a good challenge at first, soon it will become easy but is always a great warm-up/practice. |-------------------------------------------------1-3-2-4---------------------------------------------------------| |-----------------------------------------1-3-2-4---------2-4-3-5-------------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------1-3-2-4--------------------------2-4-3-5----------------------------------------| |-------------------------1-3-2-4------------------------------------------2-4-3-5--------------------------------| |-----------------1-3-2-4----------------------------------------------------------2-4-3-5------------------------| |---------1-3-2-4--------------------------------------------------------------------------2-4-3-5--------3-5-4-6-| |-1-3-2-4-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2-4-3-5---------| _______________________________________________EAR/PITCH TRAINING__________________________________________________ Get Familiar with the "E" tone. Listen how unique it is, and what you can relate it to. What color do you feel the "E" would be if it were a color? It feels cool, Minor sounding, almost black.... When you are done listening to how unique the "E" is, Then listen to each other note in the chromatic scale and notice how unique each tone is. Notice each one has its own "feeling" and "voice" even without comparing it to other notes in the scale. (not just higher and lower notes, but each sound very unique deep down). Associate each note with a color, or with an object or feeling. No need to remember the association, just do it as an excersize to be sure you are hearing the difference and feeling of each. It is hard at first but keep listening without trying too hard. Soon you will notice how unique each tone is in itself. Dont try naming them, just listen... no need to memorize ANYTHING. __________________________________________SONGWRITING/TECHNIQUE____________________________________________________ Listen to something new, then to something old. Start by finding a new song (not necessarily by date, but new to you) either by randomly looking online, or by borrowing music from a friend. Then try to find some music you listened to looong ago, maybe as a child, or possibly something you just havnt heard in a few years. The point here is to listen to different music, for what it is, do not listen completely for technique, or style. Just try to see what the artist was doing, or trying to say. Of course listening to technique is great, but be sure to take the song in completely. (even if its a nursery ryhme!) I bet you can even see that both of these songs have similarities (no matter how different!). Sometimes you will remember why you liked the old song so much, or you may see that the music you borrowed, may not be your style, but you can still appreciate what the artist is trying to do. A good idea is to find a very popular artist from long ago or current, that you never really gave a listen. Its good to listen to the greats of the past and present even if you find it boring, or not your style. These artists have helped develop technique, and have been and will be, inspiration for artists you have grown to love. This is a good practice anytime, to help open your ear to different styles, artists and their methods. Listen to as many different bands as you can, I have heard thousands! You may even find your next favorite artist/band who can change your view on music altogether! _____________________________________MY OWN MAYBE NOT SO NORMAL OPINION ON MUSIC____________________________________ The biggest thing you need to work on as a musician playing live, and even writing, is confidence. Technique, style, presence, etc. all are a big deal when playing live but if you dont have the confidence then this will never happen. The more you learn, and the more you become "comfortable" With the instrument, the better you will be. Most NON-musicians dont even know a bad note in todays rock music, and even if you do hit a "bad" note, it could be your "artistic" way of throwing in chaos, or a "strange" or "spooky" feeling. If you play it confidently and dont just STOP, you can easily cover it up, often you can do it again and again. This will seem like some crazy wacky, very unique riff! So by a mistake you just made a really cool riff! So be confident in what you play, just think of those mistakes as personality and work it into the song if you need. Of course you gotta keep practicing so you dont have too much "personality" haha ;oP Sooner or later you wont make as many mistakes and will want to make off sounding phrases to make your music interesting. Things like chromatic runs, or dissonant or diminished chords. You dont have to know what you are playing ALL the time, playing live is a time to kick back and play confidently what you know, and any mistakes you make will blend, with an entire band this is much easier. As I mentioned most people wont even know the mistake, often even your band mates will think you did it on purpose. The key is, you gotta be smooooooth... Dont let it get to you and pull out of it! Sometimes its even good to emphasize the mistake! Make it bend all crazy and pull the whammy bar, jump on the amp bounce around and start your guitar on fire while it feeds back!! Ok... I dont condone all the stuff I just said... but hey it can be fun!!! And do you think someone will think you suck if you do all that? Of course not... And is that feedback/noise in key? NO! Then go ahead and feel like hendrix when you make a mistake and bend into the correct sound, or just go crazy and have "CON... FEE... DENSE..." Confidence! ;o) **Brainphreak** ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ############################################################################################################################ ############################################################################################################################ ########################################## WRITTEN BY **BRAINPHREAK** ###################################################### ############################################################################################################################ ######################### FEEL FREE TO COPY OR DISTRIBUTE, BUT PLEASE LEAVE THIS FOOTER #################################### ######################### HERE FOR CREDIT.
